Here's the question worth answering clearly: in an EH oil system's accumulator circuit, is this stop valve normally sitting fully open, or fully closed? The answer, in the overwhelming majority of installations, is fully open during normal operation. This valve's whole purpose in this application is providing a way to isolate the accumulator from the rest of the EH oil system when maintenance work needs to happen - not to regulate flow or pressure during routine running conditions. Leaving it anything other than fully open during normal operation would restrict oil flow to and from the accumulator, potentially interfering with the accumulator's ability to do its actual job of absorbing pressure spikes and providing stored hydraulic energy on demand.

 

Which leads directly to the second part of the question: is this valve's core function acting as a maintenance isolation valve, or as a pressure regulating device? It's squarely the former. SHV20-00 isn't designed or intended to throttle flow or fine-tune pressure the way a control valve or a pilot-operated relief valve does - its job is binary, open for normal running, closed for isolation during maintenance, inspection, or accumulator servicing. Trying to use it as a pressure regulation tool by leaving it partially open would work against its design intent and likely accelerate wear on sealing surfaces that weren't built for continuous partial-flow throttling duty.

 

This isolation role matters more than it might first appear, especially for accumulators, since these components store significant hydraulic energy even when the rest of the system is depressurized for maintenance. Having a reliable, fully-rated isolation valve like SHV20-00 upstream of the accumulator gives maintenance crews a genuine, trustworthy way to lock out stored energy before opening up any part of the accumulator assembly for service - a real safety function hiding behind what looks, at first glance, like a simple shutoff valve.

 

Plants relying on SHV20-00 in this role generally verify it moves freely and seals completely during scheduled maintenance windows, confirming the valve will actually do its isolation job reliably the next time it's genuinely needed for a safe accumulator shutdown.
